LG Opens Massive Battery Plant in Michigan Amid Shifting U.S. Energy Landscape

A Pivotal Opening Under Political Scrutiny

Despite the Trump administration’s skepticism toward electric vehicles, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum praised the grand opening of LG Energy Solution’s massive battery facility in Lansing, Michigan. Doug Burgum cheered the plant as a prime example of domestic manufacturing growth.

“That’s the American energy dominance in action, which is more jobs, strong allies, secure supply chains — and right here, that’s happening,” Doug Burgum stated during the opening ceremony on Tuesday.

Adapting to Market Demands and Grid Storage

Originally conceived in 2022 as part of Ultium Cells—a joint venture with General Motors—the 226-acre facility underwent strategic pivots after General Motors sold its stake in 2025. LG Energy Solution adapted the plant to prioritize energy storage systems alongside EV batteries to meet surging grid demands driven by artificial intelligence data centers.

“No matter which side of the aisle you’re on, there’s a desire to have energy independence and to meet load growth,” explained Devon Wilson, vice president of sales and marketing for LG’s U.S. energy storage division.

Massive Investment and Production Capacity

LG Energy Solution has invested more than $2 billion into the Lansing plant, which currently employs 900 workers and plans to hire approximately 800 more, bringing total employment to 1,700. Operations director Anthony O’Donovan noted that the facility will produce more than 35 gigawatt-hours of battery cells annually at full capacity next year.

The facility will manufacture nickel-manganese-cobalt cells for Toyota electric vehicles, including the 2027 Toyota Highlander, alongside lithium-iron phosphate cells for grid storage clients like Terra-Gen, Qcells, and Tesla’s Megapack 3 factory in Houston.
