On August 10, iHeartMedia, the largest U.S. radio and podcast distribution company, reported that its second-quarter revenue grew by 4.7% to $977 million, outperforming guidance largely due to an increase in political primary advertisements and campaigns for the upcoming November midterm elections.

Digital and Podcast Segments Drive Growth

While the company’s multiplatform group—which includes over 860 broadcast radio stations—saw revenue slip 2% to $536 million, the digital audio group experienced strong gains. Digital revenue rose 12% to $364 million. Notably, iHeartMedia‘s fast-growing podcast division generated $164 million in revenue, marking a 21% increase from the previous year, while digital revenue excluding podcasts rose 7% to $202 million.

Financial Outlook and Guidance

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) fell 2.9% to $152 million, down from $156 million in the same period last year. Meanwhile, cash provided by operating activities reached $65 million, and free cash flow turned positive at $46 million, recovering from a loss of $13 million last year. Executives reaffirmed their full-year guidance, projecting an EBITDA of $800 million and a free cash flow of $200 million.

Political Ad Demand and Advertiser Diversity

Executives expect robust advertising spending to continue through the second half of the year as political advertisers spill over from television placements. Pittman noted that early indicators show performance matching a presidential election year. Furthermore, executives emphasized that no single advertiser accounts for more than 2% of total ad revenue, and no industry segment exceeds a 5% share, providing strong protection against macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties.
