On August 11th, 2026, at the iconic Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the hydrogen-powered JCB Hydromax shattered records by hitting an astonishing 406.320 mph (653.9 km/h). Playing a surprisingly vital role in this historic feat was the Land Rover Defender OCTA, which served as the official push vehicle tasked with launching the 5,600 lb (2,550 kg) racer from a standstill to 60 mph within a strict 300-meter (984 ft) window.
Engineering a Unique Partnership on the Salt
Because the JCB Hydromax features high-speed gearing designed purely for extreme velocity once it is already moving, event regulations permitted a push start for the first 300 meters of each run. JLR entrusted this heavy-duty task to the Defender OCTA, the most powerful and fastest Defender ever built. Propelled by a 626-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 powertrain featuring a 48V mild-hybrid system, the SUV seamlessly handled the immense load despite an effective altitude density equivalent of up to 2,244 meters (7,365 feet) above sea level.
Modifications and Precision Suspension
To safely execute the push without adding unnecessary ballast, engineers fitted a bespoke push plate to the Defender OCTA‘s integrated, crash-tested winch mount. The team disabled the mount’s deformable crumple zone and introduced critical reinforcements, including a brace bar linked to the front recovery point. Furthermore, the vehicle’s advanced 6D Dynamics suspension—utilizing hydraulically-interlinked and continuously variable semi-active dampers—successfully eliminated body roll and pitch to keep the push plate level during hard acceleration.

Once the JCB Hydromax cleared 60 mph, the hydrogen-combustion vehicle took over under its own power, ultimately securing both a Southern California Timing Association Speed Record and an official Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) world record.
