Japanese gaming giant Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have announced that their hit spin-off title Pokémon Pokopia has officially surpassed 5 million units globally. Achieved just over four months after its March 5 launch, this milestone means that roughly one in four owners of the flagship Nintendo Switch 2 console now possesses a copy, providing a much-needed boost to the company’s shares.
Surpassing Expectations and First-Party Giants
Despite being a spin-off title developed by the creators of Dragon Quest Builders and bearing gameplay elements similar to Animal Crossing, Pokémon Pokopia has dramatically outperformed expectations. Co-published by Nintendo and Koei Tecmo, the game has become the second-best-selling title on the Nintendo Switch 2, trailing only Mario Kart World—which boasts an impressive 15.39 million sales—while outperforming other major releases like Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Donkey Kong Bananza.
Market Impact and Financial Recovery
The stellar performance of Pokémon Pokopia has offered a strong financial cushion for Nintendo, whose shares closed 7% higher in Japan following the announcement. The hardware market has faced recent headwinds, including a 34.4% year-on-year drop in quarterly hardware sales down to 3.82 million units due to rising memory prices. With the recent release of paid downloadable content like “Part 1: Bubbly Basin”, Nintendo hopes to sustain player engagement and drive further Switch 2 adoption as it forecasts 16.5 million console sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027.
Future Catalysts and Strategic Shifts
The success of Pokémon Pokopia aligns with Koei Tecmo‘s strategy to diversify its portfolio through smaller, community-focused projects to reduce reliance on mainstream blockbusters. Meanwhile, Nintendo is banking on upcoming titles—including a remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” and two new Pokémon games slated for next year—to spur hardware momentum and help recover ground after seeing stock down over 16% earlier in the year, despite a robust 26% rally over the past month.
