In a strategic move reflecting a broader industry trend, Cipher Digital—formerly known as Cipher Mining—has sold approximately 471 BTC to fund its aggressive transition into artificial intelligence and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. The significant asset liquidation leaves the company holding 646 BTC, valued at roughly $37.8 million, down steeply from 1,433 BTC at the close of 2025.

The Rebranding and Massive Infrastructure Pipeline

Marking its official pivot, the company rebranded to Cipher Digital on February 20, 2026. While maintaining limited mining operations at a 207 MW facility in Odessa, Texas, the firm is rapidly converting its remaining footprint to support AI workloads. Cipher Digital is currently developing a staggering capacity pipeline of 4.2 GW, with over 600 MW in HPC facilities actively under consideration. To lock in these lucrative operations, the firm has secured long-term 10- to 15-year leases with major hyperscalers like Amazon Web Services and Google, generating a contracted revenue backlog exceeding $11 billion.

Market Context and the Economic Rationale Behind the Bet

The transition is underpinned by the overlapping resource demands of both sectors. Bitcoin miners spent years acquiring cheap electricity and robust electrical infrastructure—assets that translate seamlessly to powering massive GPU clusters for AI training. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (BTC) prices hover near $63,121.10 within Bollinger bands, facing technical pressures indicated by a MACD death cross at -329.36 and a neutral RSI of 39.38. For crypto miners, liquidating volatile digital assets in favor of physical, contracted cash-flow-generating infrastructure represents a calculated long-term hedge.
