A senior R&D engineer at Nanya Technology has been formally indicted in Taiwan for allegedly attempting to steal proprietary DRAM manufacturing process secrets by concealing a 360-degree action camera inside a bag of snacks. The suspect, identified as Yeh Yen-wei, planned to leverage the confidential data to secure a high-paying position at a semiconductor firm in China. However, his sophisticated espionage attempt was thwarted when the company’s internal IT security systems flagged abnormal wireless signals originating from the restricted facility.
The High-Tech Espionage Plot Unfolds
According to investigations by the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office, Yeh Yen-wei joined Nanya Technology in 2022 as a senior engineer in the Advanced Process Development Division. In early 2025, he began communicating with Chinese recruitment agencies to explore employment opportunities. After submitting his resignation in mid-February 2026, Yeh Yen-wei executed his scheme between late March and early April 2026. Utilizing weekends and off-hours, he smuggled an Insta360 X4 Air action camera past security checkpoints by hiding it within a bag of snacks. Once inside restricted areas, he accessed virtual machines using his legitimate credentials to photograph and record 32 files containing critical DRAM manufacturing process technologies and production methods.
IT Security and Leaky Wireless Signals
The breach came to light not through traditional surveillance, but via advanced digital monitoring. Nanya Technology‘s IT security team detected abnormal Bluetooth and Wi-Fi transmission signals inside restricted fabrication areas. By cross-referencing these wireless anomalies with employee access logs and activity records, security personnel pinned down the rogue engineer. Nanya Technology promptly reported the incident to Taiwanese authorities, triggering an official indictment under Taiwan’s Trade Secrets Act and breach of trust provisions under the Criminal Code. Yeh Yen-wei faces up to 10 years in prison.
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities and Legal Fallout
The timing of the security breach coincides with intense global competition for 10nm-class process technology, as Nanya Technology pours an estimated NT$300 billion into a massive new advanced fabrication facility. During the ongoing investigation, the defendant has reportedly confessed to the unauthorized reproduction of intellectual property. However, forensic examinations of the seized equipment revealed no evidence that the confidential files were successfully transmitted to any external parties or Chinese firms, meaning Yeh Yen-wei could potentially face a less severe final sentence while underscoring the severe risks facing the global semiconductor supply chain.
