Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios‘ blockbuster ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continues its unstoppable theatrical run, securing its third consecutive weekend at the top of the domestic box office with an estimated $67 million. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, the superhero epic has pushed its domestic total to an incredible $782.8 million through Sunday, solidifying its place among the highest-grossing films in North American history.
The Road to $1 Billion and Global Milestones
As ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ barrels toward the historic $1 billion domestic milestone, it currently stands just behind ‘Avatar’ at $785.2 million on the all-time domestic chart. The film is pacing 5.6% ahead of the 17-day pace set by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. Furthermore, industry analysts project that the feature will become the eighth film in history to gross $2 billion worldwide, with eyes on reaching $2.5 billion alongside hits like ‘Ne Zha 2’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’.
Newcomers Face Mixed Fortunes at the Box Office
While Spider-Man rules the weekend, new releases faced a split crowd. Paramount and Spin Master‘s ‘PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie’ outperformed expectations with a projected $20 million opening weekend, pulling in $7.35 million on Friday from 3,545 locations and earning an A CinemaScore. Featuring a voice cast including Carter Young, Mckenna Grace, Terry Crews, Jennifer Hudson, and Snoop Dogg, the franchise installment has already grossed $45.6 million globally.
The End of Oak Street Struggles to Find Footing
On the other hand, Warner Bros. and Bad Robot‘s dinosaur-centric thriller ‘The End of Oak Street’ opened to an estimated $18.7 million from 3,445 theaters against an $80 million production budget. Directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, the film received a B CinemaScore and mixed word-of-mouth, putting pressure on Warner Bros. following a sluggish box office year.
