The U.S. Department of Defense is pushing military technology into new frontiers. Recent live-fire exercises at Fort Bragg in North Carolina revealed a heavily modified Ford F-250 Super Duty transformed into an autonomous, drone-killing combat vehicle.
While Ford recently secured a contract to evaluate three Super Duty prototypes for the U.S. Army Heavy Infantry Squad Vehicle program, this particular battle truck was built independently by a defense contractor. General Motors also continues its work via GM Defense using the Chevy Colorado platform.
“This particular project involves a military contractor buying Ford trucks and upfitting for their needs,” stated Richard Binhammer, corporate spokesperson for Ford. “Ford is not directly involved with the Army or the contractor on this project.”
Autonomous Operations and Anti-Drone Firepower
Discovered by Next Gen Defense and highlighted by Ford Authority, the vehicle features the Forterra AutoDrive self-driving suite. This technology enables autonomous navigation while clearing minefields and contested lanes for infantry troops.
The vehicle’s primary defensive asset is its roof-mounted Edda weapon station fitted with a shotgun turret. Designed specifically to counter aerial threats, it automatically targets and neutralizes objects as small as seven inches at distances up to 100 meters.
Adapting to Modern Warfare Dynamics
The widespread deployment of small tactical drones in ongoing conflicts like Ukraine has reshaped defense priorities worldwide. Rapid automated response capabilities are becoming vital for ground troop survivability.
This experimental Ford pickup demonstrates how commercial heavy-duty trucks can be adapted with artificial intelligence to mitigate evolving low-altitude air threats.
