Accelerating Global Expansion from Seattle
Alaska Airlines is significantly accelerating its international growth by adding Athens, Greece, and Paris to its expanding route map. Nonstop flights from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to both European capitals are scheduled to begin in May, bringing the carrier’s total European destinations to five. Until 2025, the airline had never operated flights beyond North America and Hawaii, making this rapid intercontinental rollout a historic milestone for the company.
The strategic expansion is largely propelled by Alaska Air Group‘s 2024 acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines. By integrating widebody aircraft such as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners originally ordered by Hawaiian, the airline has successfully transformed its Seattle hub into a major global gateway. Alongside existing Asian routes to Tokyo and Seoul, and European services to London, Rome, and Reykjavik, the addition of Athens and Paris brings the carrier’s total intercontinental network to seven destinations.
Passenger Demand and Loyalty Driving Network Strategy
Airline executives emphasize that customer preference and frequent flyer engagement are directly shaping their route planning. Alaska Airlines described the two new cities as ‘two of the world’s most iconic destinations that rank among the most requested by Atmos Rewards members.’ This data-driven approach highlights how modern airline network planning relies heavily on loyalty program metrics and passenger search trends.
‘We fly where our guests aspire to go, and Athens and Paris have been high on that list for years,’ said Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Airlines, in an official statement. ‘As we build to more than 12 international long-haul routes from Seattle in the coming years, we’re giving travelers more ways to connect to the world and more opportunities to use Atmos Rewards.’ Echoing this sentiment, Eric Edge, vice president of brand and marketing, noted that these cities emerged as the clear frontrunners in customer search and request metrics.
Historic Milestones for West Coast Travelers
The new seasonal service to Athens International Airport will commence on May 12, operating three times a week through October. Covering an impressive 6,196 miles via flight AS196, this route will become the longest nonstop flight ever operated by the carrier. Furthermore, Alaska Airlines will make aviation history as the first airline to offer regularly scheduled nonstop service between Seattle and Athens, serving as the West Coast’s exclusive carrier on the route.
Meanwhile, seasonal service to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport via flight AS136 will launch on May 25, operating five times weekly until October. This route places Alaska Airlines in direct competition with established carriers like Air France and Delta Air Lines. Designed to offer seamless same-day connections between Paris and Honolulu, the new schedule provides unprecedented convenience for travelers moving between Europe and the Hawaiian Islands.
