SpaceX has announced plans to build an enormous new manufacturing and launch facility named Starbase Louisiana in Vermilion Parish, backed by a staggering $100 billion investment. Developed in partnership with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, the sprawling spaceport will feature 10 launch pads across five complexes on the Gulf Coast. The facility is designed to support thousands of launches annually as part of the company’s ambitious long-term interplanetary goals.
A Self-Sustaining Spaceport for Future Operations
During the announcement event, SpaceX President Gwynn Shotwell detailed the scope of the infrastructure project. ‘We’re planning to build a self-sustaining spaceport with its own propellant production, power generation, deep water shipping capabilities, vehicle processing facilities, and probably an airport,’ Shotwell stated. The site will utilize local natural gas resources to manufacture fuel onsite, drastically reducing logistical hurdles for orbital missions.
Scaling Up for Artemis and Starlink Missions
The new Louisiana site is critical for scaling up the flight rate of the fully reusable Starship rocket. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has estimated that Starship could launch more than 30 times per day by 2030. In addition to supporting upcoming NASA Artemis lunar missions, the site will eventually host launches for next-generation Starlink internet satellites and future orbital artificial intelligence supercomputing networks.
Economic Impact and Environmental Commitments
Construction on Starbase Louisiana is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first launch targeted for 2029. State officials project the massive undertaking will create 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade. Furthermore, SpaceX is collaborating with state and federal wildlife agencies on coastal preservation efforts. ‘We are committed to doing our part to ensure that this land doesn’t disappear,’ Shotwell emphasized.
