Recent scientific research reveals that listening to music for exactly 24 minutes paired with auditory beat stimulation (ABS) offers the optimal duration and method for reducing anxiety symptoms. Published in journals like PLOS Mental Health and PLOS ONE, studies show that duration matters just as much as the melody itself when managing anxiety.
The Science of Auditory Beat Stimulation and Anxiety Relief
Researchers evaluated participants experiencing moderate trait anxiety who were already managing their symptoms with medication. In a 2025 study published in PLOS Mental Health, 144 participants were assigned to groups listening to pink noise or music embedded with ABS for 12, 24, or 36 minutes. While all music conditions outperformed the control group, the 24-minute session produced the strongest overall reduction in anxiety, performing just as effectively as the 36-minute session.
This builds upon a previous 2022 study published in PLOS ONE involving 163 participants, which demonstrated that music combined with ABS successfully reduced both somatic anxiety, such as a racing heart, and cognitive anxiety, like repetitive worries. Auditory beat stimulation works by layering specific sound frequencies into audio tracks, allowing the brain to perceive a third beat and encouraging brainwave entrainment toward calmer states.
Why 24 Minutes is the Optimal Duration
Experts explain that the brain requires an initial adjustment period to settle into a calming frequency, much like the first few minutes of meditation spent quieting mental chatter. A duration of 24 minutes provides sustained brainwave entrainment without demanding a large time commitment. While 36 minutes yielded similar outcomes, researchers noted that 24 minutes strikes the ideal balance between clinical effectiveness and daily practicality.
Integrating Music Therapy into Daily Routines
Importantly, these studies featured participants already utilizing anxiety medication, indicating that music with auditory beat stimulation functions best as a complementary tool rather than a medical replacement. Author Caroline Igo and mental health specialists emphasize that incorporating a 24-minute sound session into an existing routine provides an accessible, low-risk strategy for individuals seeking natural anxiety relief.
