A recent comprehensive study published in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease reveals that lifestyle habits and modifiable risk factors directly target specific brain mechanisms, offering new insights into how individuals can protect their cognitive health. Researchers from Lund University, drawing on Sweden’s BioFINDER-2 study, followed almost 500 cognitively healthy adults for an average of about four years to track various types of brain changes over time.

Modifiable Risk Factors Drive Vascular Brain Damage

The research demonstrates that everyday risk factors commonly associated with Alzheimer’s prevention—such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, and heart disease—are strongly linked to faster vascular brain damage. Researchers found that these changeable habits do not directly accelerate amyloid or tau buildup. Instead, managing blood pressure and cholesterol actively safeguards the brain’s small blood vessels, which represent a leading contributor to memory loss and dementia.

Genetics and Amyloid Accumulation

While lifestyle choices heavily influence vascular health, the study found that amyloid buildup—the hallmark pathology typically associated with Alzheimer’s disease—is primarily driven by genetics. Carrying at least one copy of the APOE ε4 gene variant serves as the most powerful predictor of faster amyloid accumulation. However, diabetes emerged as a notable lifestyle factor linked to accelerated amyloid buildup, highlighting the complex biological interactions between insulin resistance and protein processing in the brain.

Practical Takeaways for Long-Term Brain Health

Experts emphasize that approximately 45% of dementia cases are estimated to be attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors. Sebastian Palmqvist, senior lecturer in neurology at Lund University and senior physician at the Memory Clinic at Skåne University Hospital, noted that understanding how individual risk factors affect underlying disease mechanisms helps clarify preventive strategies. While lifestyle alone cannot alter an individual’s APOE ε4 status, maintaining cardiovascular health and keeping blood sugar in check provide an evidence-backed approach to reducing overall neurological strain.
