In southwest England, the world’s oldest cheddar manufacturer, Barber’s Farmhouse Cheesemakers, has successfully slashed its electricity use by half in 2024 by adopting innovative milk-source heat pumps developed by U.K. startup Arkaya Energy. Operating since 1833, the family-run business integrated these ultraefficient devices to simultaneously chill freshly milked warm milk and heat water for facility operations, yielding annual financial savings of about $94,000 (£70,000) and reducing carbon pollution by nearly 66 tons annually across three of its milking parlors.
The Mechanics of Milk-Source Heat Pumps
Traditional dairy operations rely heavily on conventional chillers and electric-resistance heaters or fossil-fuel-fired boilers to maintain strict sanitation standards. However, Arkaya Energy founder Kumo Sharma introduced a novel approach by drawing thermal energy directly from fresh milk rather than ambient air, ground sources, or water bodies. These milk-source heat pumps cool milk down to 35 degrees Fahrenheit while successfully diverting waste heat to elevate water temperatures to 198°F, effectively covering the rigorous daily cleaning needs of udders, milk tanks, and suction equipment in a single, streamlined system.
Rapid Financial Payback and Industry Recognition
For Barber’s Farmhouse Cheesemakers, the economic incentives of adopting this clean technology proved exceptionally compelling. Farm manager and seventh-generation cheesemaker Alfie Barber noted that the investment features a payback period of less than two years. Furthermore, farm director Chris Barber highlighted that rising electricity expenses linked to geopolitical tensions in 2024 could drive actual financial savings even higher than initially projected. The technology’s efficiency and impact also earned Arkaya Energy the prestigious Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers’ 2026 innovation award.
Global Expansion and Future Market Prospects
Following successful deployments across several local facilities, Arkaya Energy plans to scale its manufacturing operations and expand its installer network. Having already installed 27 units with plans for 34 additional deployments by the end of the year, the four-person startup aims to target the broader U.K. dairy market, which comprises nearly 7,000 dairy farms. According to Ruth Checknoff, senior director at the Renewable Thermal Collaborative, combining simultaneous heating and cooling demands makes dairy farming a prime, slam-dunk application for industrial heat pumps, with future international expansion anticipated in Ireland, the broader European market, and the United States, home to nearly 25,000 dairy herds.
