Researchers at Boston College have identified a rare Martian meteorite found in Algeria that dates back 1.273 billion years, successfully filling a massive geological gap in our understanding of Mars. Designated as Northwest Africa (NWA) 13441, this olivine-rich basaltic rock belongs to the shergottite group but features a completely unexpected chemical signature and age that baffles planetary scientists.

Unlocking a Missing Chapter of Martian History

Discovered in 2019 and later analyzed by teams including lead author Dylan M. Seal and professor Ethan Baxter, the meteorite shatters conventional timelines. Until now, nearly all known shergottites were either younger than 600 million years or dated back roughly 2.4 billion years, creating an approximately 1.8 to 2-billion-year gap in the recorded history of Martian igneous rocks. NWA 13441 sits squarely in the middle of this missing interval.

A Primordial Chemical Time Capsule

Beyond its age, the meteorite’s neodymium isotopes revealed a composition closely resembling primitive chondrites dating back to the formation of the solar system 4.56 billion years ago. This suggests that the magma producing the rock tapped into a previously unsampled, ancient reservoir deep inside Mars. Unlike Earth, which constantly recycles its crust through plate tectonics, Mars evolved under a stagnant outer shell, allowing these pristine chemical fingerprints to survive for eons.

Future Analysis and Scientific Impact

Published in Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, the discovery provides unprecedented insights into early Martian volcanism and mantle reservoirs. Baxter‘s laboratory at Boston College, alongside collaborators from institutions such as the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and The Open University, plans to investigate further isotope systems to fully decode the history encapsulated within this extraordinary space rock.
