Russia bombarded cities across Ukraine with missiles and drones in a massive overnight assault that extended into Thursday morning. Explosions echoed throughout the capital city of Kyiv, highlighting the growing intensity of aerial warfare 4½ years after the invasion began.
The barrage targeted at least 9 Ukrainian cities, striking energy grids, industrial hubs, and private logistics centers. Civilian areas were severely impacted, resulting in the death of a 78-year-old woman in Zaporizhzhia and another individual in Kharkiv, with at least 14 others wounded elsewhere. In Kyiv, four districts were hit, damaging residential buildings, a school, and a medical facility, though no casualties were reported there.
Energy Infrastructure and Commercial Supply Chains Under Threat
The strikes caused major disruptions to critical civilian supply chains across the country. Drones damaged three distribution centers belonging to a toy chain, a confectionery firm, and an electronics retailer. Ukrainian state railway operator Ukrzaliznysia reported delays exceeding 17 hours due to the attacks. In the port city of Odesa, an attack lasting over seven hours damaged a 16-story residential building, two educational facilities, and a grain elevator vital for agricultural exports.
Energy assets were also hit ahead of the freezing winter months. Four heavy glide bombs devastated generating equipment at a combined heat and power plant in the Kherson region, forcing operator Naftogaz to shut down the facility. Meanwhile, major attacks hit industrial infrastructure in Poltava, according to regional administrator Vitalii Diakivnych, as well as port facilities in Odesa led by regional governor Oleh Kiper.
Air Defense Shortages and International Concerns
Ukraine faces severe shortages of U.S.-made Patriot defense systems capable of intercepting fast-flying ballistic missiles. Nevertheless, Ukraine’s air force reported that defenses shot down or suppressed 7 Russian ballistic missiles during the attack.
