A groundbreaking new scientific study published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters has revealed alarming details about a controversial plan from the Californian startup Reflect Orbital to place giant mirrors in orbit and beam sunlight down to Earth after dark. Led by researchers including Gáspár Bakos, the study models the severe light pollution that would be generated by a proposed constellation of up to 50,000 orbiting reflectors, raising serious concerns among astronomers and dark-sky advocates worldwide.

The Threat of Sunlight on Demand

The Californian company’s pilot satellite, named Eärendil-1, carries an 18 by 18-meter reflector at roughly 600 kilometers altitude. Pitched as a way to power solar farms through the night or illuminate disaster zones for rescue crews, the technology is rapidly moving from concept to reality. However, production versions stretching to 54 by 54 meters would produce devastating consequences for our view of the cosmos. According to the atmospheric physics models, a single 54-meter satellite would appear roughly four magnitudes brighter than a full moon to anyone standing directly in its beam.

Regulatory Blind Spots and Environmental Impact

Despite formal objections from the American Astronomical Society and numerous dark-sky groups, the FCC cleared the pilot satellite in July, arguing that light pollution and astronomical interference fall outside its regulatory mandate. The scattered glow from just one such mirror would outshine full moonlight across most of the sky from 14 kilometers away, turning pristine night environments into perpetual twilight and threatening nocturnal wildlife and migrating birds.
